The
producers made the film with desire to keep the telling as close as
possible to the fictional
story written by Dostoyevsky. It tells
the moral tale
of man
who is not a gambler by nature, but throught
the circumstances beyond his
control he ends up gambling with such reckless abandon that he ruins himself, not
only financially, but also spiritually-costing him his friends
and
loved ones,
reputation and finally
life...

"In The Days When We Were Zillioners..."
The Gambler was
produced during the period of
highest hyperinflation in former Yugoslavia, and
Worldwide -- which occurred in December, 1993.
The film was made with $70,000 US, only, but it
was almost impossible to keep accurate records,
since the local currency list used to be updated
several times a day.
In the early days of filming (December 06, 1993),
US$1 was 177,905,665 YUD (Yugoslav Dinars),
but it increased to incredible 1,056,166,561,273
YUD, during the last day of shooting (December
30, 1993).
Up to date, these figures have been unseen in
the history of cinematography.
